Friends Group
Friends Who Care and Count is a group of young adult self-advocates formed to meet their needs in achieving self determination and their role in the community. The group focuses on socialization, community participation, personal growth, self-determination and personal advocacy. The group elects a president who presides over most meetings.Friends Who Care and Count meet each Monday early evening. Weekly activities vary from individual sharing of accomplishments and concerns to an educational session with a nurse from the Health Office. The group share a Traditional Thanksgiving dinner with approximately sixty friends and family. They also adopt a child with a disability at Christmas and provided gifts. They also participate in summer activities such as swimming parties, movies and miniature golf.
Friends Who Care and Count partners with Vincennes University students. The VU students (being of similar ages) are peers of the self advocates and all participate in settings in the community together.
